On May 28th, the Embassy and the American Battle Monuments Commission held the annual Memorial Day ceremony at the American Military Cemetery and Memorial in Hamm, Luxembourg. Ambassador McKean was joined by many dignitaries of Luxembourg: His Excellency Mr. Lucien Weiler Marshal of the Court, Ms. Simone Beissel Vice-President of the Chamber of Deputies, Mr. Carlo Krieger, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. George Wivenes President of the Council of State, Ms. Lydie Polfer Mayor of Luxembourg City and General Romain Mancinelli, Chief of staff of the Luxembourg Army. This year’s guest speaker was LTG Timothy M. Ray, Commander 3rd Air Force. Military support was given by the 52ND Fighter Wing Honor Guard, the Luxembourg Army Color Guard and Military band, the Honor Flight USAFE 726 AMS and the Honor Platoon 18th MP Brigade. In his opening remarks, Ambassador McKean said: “ As we look out across the rows and rows of white, marble crosses and stars, It is important to remember that each one represents an actual person – someone who had family and friends waiting for him back home, someone who had made promises he intended to keep, and some
one who undoubtedly had hopes and dreams for tomorrow”. He went on by drawing a short portrait of three individual soldiers buried in Hamm (for full speech, click on the link below). After the wreathes laying by the Official Party and several dozens of associations, a 21 Gun Salute was fired and both National Anthems of Luxembourg and the U.S.A were played and sang.
