Chargé d’Affaires Alison Shorter-Lawrence and Embassy staff visited Luxembourg’s first Starbucks today, located at the LUX airport. Delicious beverages were enjoyed by all! SSP, a French food retail outlet manager specialized in travel center locations, such as airports and train stations, was awarded the tender at the airport after proposing a Starbucks store. SSP already had a proven track record with their Starbucks franchises in France. The Findel Starbucks, the first ever in the Grand Duchy and a long-awaited and desired outlet, has experienced heavy and steady business (double the business plan) since opening in January 2016. Students have been coming by bus into the airport terminal from the city-center just to grab a coffee (and a choice of scrumptious muffins and assorted other goodies), as well as the working population at the airport and in the ever-growing surrounding area. The manager representing SSP told us that several investors have approached him to open other Starbucks in Luxembourg – which he fully expects will happen independently of SSP. Already, a second shop opened in Aire de Berchem (by the highway) which is licensed to another private operator (not SSP). Similar to a classic franchise system, these Starbucks operators sign a contract with Starbucks headquarters in Seattle and must follow the company’s strict guidelines and requirements to uphold the high quality and standard of products sold (including brand merchandise, such as mugs and thermos). The design and décor of each shop is created by Starbucks, and all staff follow the same training programs, in various locations worldwide.
